The Vanguard is an intimate, purpose built live music venue and restaurant that plays host to the greats of Australian and international music. With a 1920's feel to the interior, the Vanguard's friendly and unpretentious luxury has an ambience unlike any other. Our aim is to provide patrons with an elegant and stylish restaurant, which provides live entertainment, highlighting some of Newtown and Sydney's most talented musicians.

Groundhog Day

film night!

A weather man is reluctantly sent to cover a story about a weather forecasting "rat" (as he calls it). This is his fourth year on the story, and he makes no effort to hide his frustration. On awaking the 'following' day he discovers that it's Groundhog Day again, and again, and again. First he uses this to his advantage, then comes the realisation that he is doomed to spend the rest of eternity in the same place, seeing the same people do the same thing EVERY day.

Entry is $5, and as usual the popcorn is complimentary.
We'll also have our bar, pizza and cocktail menus available on the night.
Shorts and clips from 7pm, Feature starts at 8pm.

Coronet Blue

The Peter Northcote Band

Coronet Blue, with their newly released third album, BETTER DAY make their much anticipated LIVE SHOWS at Bluesfest and at The Vanguard in Sydney. The Vanguard show will also feature a very special guest – one of Australia’s finest…. The Peter Northcote Band.

Singer songwriter John Rooney always has a knack of putting together a stellar super group which will excite every music fan. Their songs and performance will surprise, they are not to be missed.

The Vanguard has help nurture many artist and is the perfect venue to help artist climb the ranks and increase their profile in the Australian Music Scene.

Artist like Sarah Blasko, The Snowdroppers, Lanie Lane and the list goes on have all graced the Vanguard stage and have worked hand in hand to help grow their careers. It is now time to put a strong series of events together where once again The Vanguard and Australian artist join to work together to showcase the best of the upcoming talent.

Mat McHugh

with Luke Wellington

Mat McHugh is coming to The Vanguard on April 23 for a very special show. In addition to performing songs he wrote and recorded with The Beautiful Girls plus songs from his solo albums, Mat will also be previewing songs from the album he will commence recording in April including his current release, More Money. On stage in a mixture of acoustic and electric modes, Mat will be joined by longtime friend, producer and sometime member of The Beautiful Girls, Ian Pritchett.

Backsliders

Continental Robert Susz and Adam Pringle

Blues legends The Backsliders played the opening night at the Vanguard and have been regulars ever since. They are back to launch their latest album ‘Dark Side’ as part of a 2014 Australia tour.

Dom Turner, Rob Hirst & Ian Collard will be playing their own primal mix of original blues, hollers, breakdowns, and grooves.

Origami Birds

Sugar Wolves + Foveaux

Fusing elements of pop, funk, and soul, the emerging Origami Birds are aiming to provide a new ambience amongst the Sydney music scene. Formed late 2013, the band have spent their time productively writing and creating a sound unique to their own. Taking their influences and experiences from almost all genres imaginable, the band have taken the best of contemporary music to create a catchy, groovy, and fun vibe. While only being around the Sydney music scene for a short while, the band has shared the stage with funk group JUNK and electronic outfit Froyo.

In Elizabethan London, six knights - perfect strangers to one another - are hired to rob a case of precious jewels from a coach on it's way to the King. After their robbery is thwarted, the brigands realize that one of them must secretly be an officer in disguise. But which one?

This is Reservoir Dogs as you've never seen it before - a bloody revenge tragedy in the style of William Shakespeare.

Little Earthquake

With a debut single “Planets” launching the band earlier this year, Sydney newcomers Little Earthquake are taking to the stage to launch their new EP “Bright Side”.

Little Earthquake is the brainchild of siblings Mathew and Justin Hyland, keen students of indie pop, embracing rock, electronic and acoustic instruments to bring their quirky melodies to life.

Based on the Central Coast, the brothers grew up in bands together at school before heading to the states where they toured as guest members of US indie rockers Lydia, crossing the US and getting a taste for the road.

Sam And The Bird is a collection of roaring vocals and multifaceted lyrical ideas mashed together to create something from the mind of all the members. Taking its roots from acoustic instrumental music Lachlan McCarthy (Guitarist, songwriter) was busking around Sydney this small idea has grown into an eclectic full band project first bringing Patrick Reuter-Town (Vocals, Guitar) onboard.

Mustered Courage.

Green Mohair Suits

Mixing old-school bluegrass with modern roots music, Mustered Courage rose to the top of Australia’s folk scene in 2011, thanks to a self-titled debut album that won the band a string of warm reviews, plenty of radio support and a trophy at the 2012 Music Oz Awards.

After playing every major Australian festival in 2012, these down-home pickers are in the middle of their biggest year to date- - a year that recently saw the release of their second album, Powerlines. Produced by Aria Award-winning producer Jimi Maroudas (The Living End, Eskimo Joe, Kimbra), ‘Powerlines’ finds the band fine-tuning a diverse sound that one publication recently described as “the link between Bill Monroe and Mumford & Sons.

Things of Stone and Wood - 25th Anniversary Tour

Twenty-five years ago a rag-tag bunch of folkies got together and formed a band called Things of Stone & Wood that went on to define Melbourne in the early 90s.

Off the back of their top 10 single ‘Happy Birthday Helen’, the band achieved national success, international tours, a gold album ‘The Yearning’ and even a Late Show parody, kicking off a career that would place them as one of Australia's most loved Folk-Rock bands.
