Perry Keyes

+ Sam Shinazzi

Raised in the inner-city working class suburb of Redfern, Perry Keyes has released three critically acclaimed and award-winning albums including the ABC Radio National Album of the Year and AMP shortlisted ‘The Last Ghost Train Home’ and the ARIA nominated ‘Johnny Ray’s Downtown’.

Perry’s fourth album Sunnyholt is both the largely untold, widescreen story of Sydney’s western suburbs diaspora and, more importantly, the personal tale of a family disintegrating under social and economic pressures.

“Perry is the real deal. Songs from the heart, from the Aussie street. He is a rare talent” – Peter Garrett
“Perry Keyes is a Sydney romantic who can see the battered beauty beneath the gloss” Sydney Morning Herald

The Wild Wild Inner West Review

ft: Michael Carpenter & The Cuban Heels + Bree De Rome + Jason Walker + Mark Moldre Band

What is “The Wild Wild Inner West Review”? There’s been a movement around the Inner West of excellent alt.country/Americana type bands for some time. These aren’t necessarily bands that will make it to Tamworth next week, though some certainly have and will. But they wear their love of this style of music proudly, ranging from the glossier commercial pop variety, all the way through to the more raucous, rustic, blue-grassy and folky as well. The aim of these nights is to bring a bunch of these bands together, for all those neglected country music fans who live in the City. It’s kind of a pre-festival, mini review, featuring 4 great acts.

“VAN THE MAN” had its roots in the highly successful Sydney wine bar circuit of the 1970’s.

“Van the Man” has gone on to perform for State of Origin fixtures, Bledisloe Cup Finals and sold out one of Sydney’s premier live music venues, The Basement. Other premium venues include Blue Beat Live Club at Double Bay, all three Lizotte’s Live Music Venues and a sellout show on New Year’s Eve at the highly acclaimed international musicians’ venue of The Clarendon Guesthouse in Katoomba. Alin and Melike - El Espiritu Del Flamenco

Fringe Festival

"...an emotional journey spanning hundreds of years, numerous cultures and a sweep of emotions." - Syke on Stage

The dynamic combination of Alin Bahram (Flamenco Guitar) and Melike Bayram (Vocals) present El Espiritu Del Flamenco, a unique and passionate night of music and rhythms imbued with the fire of Spain and combining a magical fusion of Flamenco music with Mediterranean, Gypsy, Latin, Turkish, Moorish, Sephardic and Oriental sounds. After a series of sold out shows, Alin and Melike bring their acclaimed combination to the stage of the Vanguard for this very special Sydney Fringe Festival event.

Alin draws on many years of musical studies in the Middle East and Australia. Not surprisingly he has brought a distinct Arabic flavour to his music. His outstanding guitar artistry is the perfect compliment to Melike's dramatic vocals. Flamenco and oriental music have played a major role in Melike’s musical life. Blessed with a unique singing talent from a very early age she received both vocal and guitar training from several acclaimed teachers.

The concert will also feature special guest artists Byron Mark on percussion and Keyna Wilkins on flute. Byron is a professional percussionist, pianist and composer based in Sydney with a strong passion for African and Flamenco drumming. He has travelled to both Spain and Africa to study the rhythmic roots of the Cajon and Djembe, and regularly performs on these instruments along with various artists. Keyna Wilkins is a renowned versatile flautist with international classical training (UK, Germany, Sydney Conservatorium). Kenya has branched into flamenco, jazz, live theatre, and free improvisation. She is also a pianist and published composer.

One Love

In a year when KISS were singing "I was made for loving you" and Racey were asking us to "Lay your love on me", I was listening to my favourite album - "Natty Dread". That year, my mum and dad did an amazing thing for me. On April 27th 1979, they took me to the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney to see Bob Marley and The Wailers. I still remember it vividly and still think about the fact that so many Bob Marley fans didn't get to see him live.

My name is Brendan and I am proud to present One love - a tribute to the music of Bob Marley and the Wailers. It's performed by a hugely talented group of friends with lots in common, the biggest being a mutual love of and respect for the music. Bob Marley's music transgresses everything - race, colour, religion, age.

Alex Edwards

Alex Edwards is an acoustic singer-songwriter from Brisbane who has received praise for his clear vocal tone and original style of songwriting; Californian Indie 104 radio remarked, “We haven't heard anything like this before, at least not on our show.”

After a whirlwind 2014 which spanned performing at The Hi-Fi, recording a 20 track double album and supporting Austrian rockers Mother's Cake, the first half of 2015 has proven to be no less demanding. Releasing his debut single “My Baby Don't Know” to earnest praise in February, “meek-but-tortured vocals and snazzy acoustic guitar playing” (Jump Into Limbo magazine), Alex then collaborated on remastering his unreleased debut “Flight Frost” with Abbey Road's Ian Jones (The Stranglers, The Beach Boys).

Having this year played some of Brisbane's best-loved venues such as The Beetle Bar and The New Globe Theatre while in July touring internationally to Russia, Alex is building towards the end-of-year release of his debut album “Flight Frost”. His journey to The Vanguard on October 25th will feature the release of its third single “Can't Hold On” and also special guests from Sydney, assuring an evening celebrating Brisbane and Sydney's thriving indie music scenes.
